MTL - The universal transformer

December 05, 2006

The new MTL 25 – 320 VA transformers from Murrelektronik are outstanding because of their flexibility and the new, compact design. The redevelopment of all transformer components has meant that as well as having a new design, many features that are useful to customers have been able to be integrated in the transformers.

For example, the transformer now has an LED at the input side that indicates the presence of the primary voltage. The multiple winding at the primary side means that each transformer can be used for both 230 VAC and 400 VAC. Additional terminal blocks also allow each input voltage to be adjusted by +/- 15 VAC.

Another advantage of the new range of transformers is the combination base plate, which can be screw-mounted in the usual way by keyhole or attached to a DIN rail. The latter feature in particular allows the transformers to be installed quickly, easily and at low cost.

As well as the design, the internals of the MTL series have also undergone further development compared to conventional transformers. The transformer is supplied with two equivalent output voltages as standard (e.g. 2x24 VAC or 2x115 VAC) These outputs can be connected in parallel or in series via plug links within the transformer in order to obtain the required secondary voltage or output power. PE and 0V can be bridged in the same way if required. The plug link positions are also clearly visible with the cover closed, providing information about the current switching status of the outputs.

As well as the jumper system, the terminals have also been integrated in the transformer. This makes defective terminals and wires that have been torn off during transportation or due to collision damage a thing of the past. The new terminals also have the advantage that two leads per terminal can be connected in accordance with standards.

MTL is the transformer solution. Regardless of whether

  • the ambient temperature is 40, 55 or 60 °C
  • the input voltage is 215, 230, 245, 385, 400 or 415 VAC
  • an output voltage of 24/48 VAC or 115/230 VAC is required
  • several output branches are required
  • DIN rail attachment or screw attachment is required

Just one transformer for many applications: Reduces planning, storage and installation costs considerably.

As well as the transformers themselves, power supply units with transformers from 0.5 A to 10 A are also available with the same design. The appearance of the power supplies only differs because an additional heat sink has been integrated in the housing, containing the rectifiers and the capacitors for filtering. Another new feature of the range of power supply units with transformers is the twin LED indicator that indicates the presence of the primary (AC) and secondary (DC) voltage.
